He&#8217;s called it <a href="http://code.google.com/p/webdriver/">WebDriver</a> - it needs dusting off, but it&#8217;s looking like it&#8217;s going to be the right fit.</p>
</blockquote>
<blockquote><p>The problem with testing websites is that it has always been messy. It&#8217;s bound to be hard coordinating 3 tasks (browser, server, set of tests) across at least 2 processes on different hardware setups, and maybe even different platform architectures.</p>
<p>The set-of-tests piece of the puzzle is well understood; JUnit, TestNG, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unit_testing_frameworks">blah blah</a>.</p>
<p>The well behaved server piece is solved for Java by Jetty - you can fire up an embedded server as easy as <code>new Server();</code> (<a href="http://fisheye5.cenqua.com/browse/dwr/demo/org/getahead/dwrdemo/cli/JettyLauncher.java?r=MAIN">example</a>).</p>
<p>Now we can make browsers be as well behaved - we can remote control web browsers from within a Java program. WebDriver currently supports Internet Explorer, Firefox and HtmlUnit for totally embedded work.</p>
<p><a href="http://getahead.org/blog/joe/2007/08/20/embedded_web_testing.html">Continued</a></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This is README file for Jad - the fast Java Decompiler.<br />
<a href="http://www.kpdus.com/jad.html" title="Jad Homepage">Jad home page</a><br />
Copyright 2001 Pavel Kouznetsov (jad@kpdus.com).</p>
<p>0. Please read the disclaimer on the Jad home page.</p>
<p>1. Installation.</p>
<p>Unzip jad.zip file into any appropriate directory on your hard drive.<br />
This will create two files:</p>
<p>- an executable file named &#8216;jad.exe&#8217; (Windows *)<br />
or &#8216;jad&#8217; (*n*x)</p>
<p>- this README file</p>
<p>No other setup is required.<br />
<span id="more-103"></span><br />
2. How to use Jad</p>
<p>To decompile a single JAVA class file &#8216;example1.class&#8217;<br />
type the following:</p>
<p>jad example1.class</p>
<p>This command creates file &#8216;example1.jad&#8217; in the current directory.<br />
If such file already exists Jad asks whether you want to overwrite it or not.<br />
Option -o permits overwriting without a confirmation.</p>
<p>You can omit .class extension and/or use wildcards in the names of<br />
input files.</p>
<p>Option -s &lt;ext&gt; allows to change output file extension:</p>
<p>jad -sjava example1.class</p>
<p>This command creates file &#8216;example1.java&#8217;. Be careful when using<br />
options -o and -sjava together, because Jad can accidentally overwrite<br />
your own source files.</p>
<p>Jad uses JAVA class name as an output file name. For example, if class<br />
file &#8216;example1.class&#8217; contains JAVA class &#8216;test1&#8242; then Jad will create<br />
file &#8216;test1.jad&#8217; rather than &#8216;example1.jad&#8217;. If you want to specify<br />
your own output file name use the output redirection:</p>
<p>jad -p example1.class &gt; myexm1.java</p>
<p>Option -d allows you to specify another directory for output files,<br />
which are created, by default, in the current directory. For example:</p>
<p>jad -o -dtest -sjava *.class</p>
<p>(or jad -o -d test -s java *.class, which has the same effect)</p>
<p>This command decompiles all .class files in the current directory<br />
and places all output files with extension .java into directory &#8216;test&#8217;.</p>
<p>If you want to decompile the whole tree of JAVA classes,<br />
use the following command:</p>
<p>jad -o -r -sjava -dsrc tree/**/*.class</p>
<p>This command decompiles all .class files located in all<br />
subdirectories of &#8216;tree&#8217; and creates output files in subdirectories<br />
of &#8217;src&#8217; according to package names of classes. For example, if file<br />
&#8216;tree/a/b/c.class&#8217; contains class &#8216;c&#8217; from package &#8216;a.b&#8217;, then<br />
output file will have a name &#8217;src/a/b/c.java&#8217;.</p>
<p>Note the use of the &#8220;two stars&#8221; wildcard (&#8217;**&#8217;) in the previous<br />
command. It is handled by Jad rather than the command shell, so on<br />
UNIX the last argument should be single-quoted:</p>
<p>jad -o -r -sjava -dsrc &#8216;tree/**/*.class&#8217;</p>
<p>In a case you want to check the accuracy of the decompilation or just<br />
curious, there is an option -a which tells Jad to annotate the output<br />
with JAVA Virtual Machine bytecodes.</p>
<p>Jad supports the inner and anonymous classes.<br />
When Jad expands wildcards in the input file names,<br />
it automatically skips matching inner classes.<br />
On UNIX Jad skips inner classes if there is more than<br />
one class specified in the command line.<br />
Jad looks for inner classes in the directory of their top-level<br />
container class.</p>
<p>3. List of the command-line options.</p>
<p>Jad accepts the following options:</p>
<pre>
-a - annotate the output with JVM bytecodes (default: off)
-af - same as -a, but output fully qualified names when annotating
-clear - clear all prefixes, including the default ones (can be abbreviated as -cl)
-b       - output redundant braces (e.g., if(a) { b(); }, default: off)
-d &lt;dir&gt; - directory for output files (will be created when necessary)
-dead - try to decompile dead parts of code (if any) (default: off)
-disass - disassemble method bytecodes (no JAVA source generated)
-f - output fully qualified names for classes/fields/methods (default: off)
-ff - output class fields before methods (default: after methods)
-i - output default initializers for all non-final fields
-l&lt;num&gt; - split strings into pieces of maximum &lt;num&gt; chars (default: off)
-lnc - annotate the output with line numbers (default: off)
-lradix&lt;num&gt; - display long integers using the specified radix (8, 10 or 16)
-nl - split strings on newline character (default: off)
-nocast - don't generate auxiliary casts
-nocode - don't generate the source code for methods
-noconv - don't convert Java identifiers (default: convert)
-noctor - suppress the empty constructors
-nodos - do not check for class files written in DOS mode (CR before NL, default: check)
-nofd - don't disambiguate fields with the same names by adding signatures to their names (default: do)
-noinner - turn off the support of inner classes (default: on)
-nolvt - ignore Local Variable Table information
-nonlb - don't output a newline before opening brace (default: do)
-o - overwrite output files without confirmation (default: off)
-p - send decompiled code to STDOUT (e.g., for piping)
-pi&lt;num&gt; - pack imports into one line after &lt;num&gt; imports (default: 3)
-pv&lt;num&gt; - pack fields with identical types into one line (default: off)
-pa &lt;pfx&gt;- prefix for all packages in generated source files
-pc &lt;pfx&gt;- prefix for classes with numerical names (default: _cls)
-pf &lt;pfx&gt;- prefix for fields with numerical names (default: _fld)
-pe &lt;pfx&gt;- prefix for unused exception names (default: _ex)
-pl &lt;pfx&gt;- prefix for locals with numerical names (default: _lcl)
-pm &lt;pfx&gt;- prefix for methods with numerical names (default: _mth)
-pp &lt;pfx&gt;- prefix for method parms with numerical names (default: _prm)
-r - restore package directory structrure
-radix&lt;num&gt; - display integers using the specified radix (8, 10 or 16)
-s &lt;ext&gt; - output file extension (by default '.jad')
-safe - generate additional casts to disambiguate methods/fields (default: off)
-space - output space between keyword (if/for/while/etc) and expression (default: off)
-stat - display the total number of processed classes/methods/fields
-t - use tabs instead of spaces for indentation
-t&lt;num&gt;  - use &lt;num&gt; spaces for indentation (default: 4)
-v - display method names being decompiled
-8 - convert UNICODE strings into 8-bit strings
using the current ANSI code page (Win32 only)
-&amp; - redirect STDERR to STDOUT (Win32 only)
</pre>
<p>All single-word options have three formats:</p>
<pre>
-o - 'reverses' value of an option
-o+ - set value to 'true' or 'on'
-o- - set value to 'false' or 'off'
</pre>
<p>You can specify the options you want to be set by default in the environment variable<br />
JAD_OPTIONS. For example:</p>
<p><code>JAD_OPTIONS=-ff+ -nonlb+ -t+ -space+</code></p>

<h2>Only content free from formatting can be easily repurposed</h2>
<p> The use of font element or inline CSS fuses content and formatting together. By turning off the CSS on your Web site, you can see if your content is free from formatting and if it can be easily repurposed in a different page layout, should you want to redesign your Web site in the future.</p>
<h2>Content is king</h2>
<p>Are visitors attracted to your Web because of its quality content or because of its pretty layout? By turning off the CSS on your Web site, you have the opportunity to see what you are really offering your visitors - quality content!</p>
<h2>Search engine-friendly markup</h2>
<p>Search engines are blind - they don&#8217;t see the pretty formatting on your site. By turning off the CSS on your Web site, you have the opportunity to see your Web site in a similar way to how search engines see it. Making sure your Web site works well with CSS turned off will make it easier for search engines to process your Web pages and will lead to a better search ranking.</p>

<h2>Typical Services</h2>
<p>Below are examples of services I offer for systems engineering.</p>
<h3>Site Maintenance</h3>
<dl>
<dt>Benefit </dt>
<dd>Increase Visitor Conversion - Visitor conversion is when a simple visit is &#8220;converted&#8221; into a lead. A visitor becomes a sales lead by entering information, requesting information, signing up for a newsletter. </dd>
</dl>
<ol></ol>
<p>Site maintenance consists of various elements.  Tools are used such as Google analytics and other statistical tracking software to understand how users use the website.  Tracking the website routinely I can perform services in the following disciplines.</p>
<ol>
<li><span style="font-weight: bold">Site Performance</span> - Tracking and Analysis - Routinely study the traffic of the site.
<ul>
<li>Search engine indexing rate</li>
<li>Search engine result quality</li>
<li>Search engine result ranking</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li><span style="font-weight: bold"> Site Quality </span>- Adjust site such that it performs better, is upgraded with the most current software and has very low defects.</li>
<li>     <span style="font-weight: bold"> Site Usability</span> - Adjust site for     optimal user experience</li>
</ol>
<h3>   Site Improvements</h3>
<dl>
<dt>Benefit</dt>
<dd>Editor can easily update and add content to the website. </dd>
</dl>
<p> The velocity of change and technology advancement means your site can always be improved. Fresh site content causes search engines to visit the site more frequently. Unfortunately a technology barrier exists which prohibits average users from entering content into their websites. I can help remove the barrier by &#8230;</p>
<ul>
<li>Improving the website software until author can use it without technical assistance.</li>
<li>Site content advice and consulting and training.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Technical Support and Computer Traing</h3>
<dl>
<dt>Benefit</dt>
<dd>Increase user efficiency with technology. Systems maintained and fixed when needed.</dd>
</dl>
<p> Remote access to the desktop is done in order to assist more quickly. Phone support is also an option.</p>
<h1>   Summary</h1>
<p>If something isn&#8217;t on this list, most likely if its relating to computers I can help.</p>

<h2><a href="http://www.strassmann.com/pubs/cw/bad-software.shtml">Software: So Bad, It Can Only Get Better</a></h2>
<h3>by Paul A. Strassmann</h3>
<h3></h3>
<h3>Computerworld</h3>
<h3></h3>
<h3>December 9, 1996</h3>
</p>
<p>Software can easily rate among the most poorly constructed, unreliable and least maintainable technological artifacts ever invented by man &#8212; with perhaps the exception of Icarus&#8217; wings.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Nobody would tolerate telephones that crash every other day. Nobody would buy a house if taxes and upkeep were seven times the purchase price. Nobody would acquire a microwave oven if it meant rewiring the entire house every time some other new appliance was plugged in. Absolutely nobody would spend a year&#8217;s rent to replace all doors because somebody attached the hinges with only two screws instead of the required four.</p>
</blockquote>
<p><span id="more-82"></span></p>
<blockquote><p>Yet these are the analogies executives think of when systems developers explain why it&#8217;s hard to implement an important new technology. No wonder executives become exasperated. No wonder they turn to vendors who can make the software mess disappear from sight, whatever the cost and whether or not they fix what was wrong to begin with.</p>
<p>Still, the suffering goes on. There is always a champion who demands that IS develop a new computer application for coping with operating problems. What champions and their followers don&#8217;t understand is that applications become increasingly difficult to service over time as an unceasing stream of upgrades and what is loosely called &#8220;maintenance&#8221; replaces what was previously constructed at great expense.</p>
<p>Software does not physically wear out. It is supposed to improve with use as errors are discovered, then corrected. Yet, software tends to degenerate much faster than any computer equipment - or any other consumer appliance or consumer good - because of its inherently poor characteristics.</p>
<h2>Software Characteristics</h2>
<p>Software becomes obsolete because programmers and vendors can&#8217;t keep up with rapid change coming from many directions.</p>
<p>Here are some of the sources of disturbance:</p>
<h3>Increasing Incompatibility</h3>
<p>There is the erosion in compatibility in the microprocessor architecture upon which all operating systems are constructed. The capacity to pack millions and soon billions of semiconductor elements on a silicon chip corrodes the foundation on which everything else is constructed. As hardware moves from an eight-bit processor to a 64-bit processor, all of the software must be adapted accordingly. As communication speeds quicken, the concept of what must be processed centrally and what can be handled locally undergoes radical change. The layers upon layers on which the useful applications rest are not bedrock, but continually shifting quicksand. No wonder what rests on top is prone to sudden collapse.</p>
<h3>Creeping Features</h3>
<p>The software market, with its rapidly changing cast of suppliers, is a rat race fueled by generous advertising allowances, conventions, magazines and clever vendor tactics that support only the latest version of a software package. Under such conditions programmers have little incentive to create something of more than immediate use.</p>
<h3>Unqualified Programmers</h3>
<p>Even though the market will deliver, in due course, operating system platforms that are more stable than what&#8217;s out there at the time, it&#8217;s unlikely that most programmers will have the incentives to program reliable applications unless management insists on and verifies them. Most of today&#8217;s programming of business applications is not done by programming professionals. It is performed by amateurs whose competency has never been formally tested. Plumbers, beauticians and truck drivers are subjected to tougher certification standards than those who deliver most business applications. It is office workers who write applications for data management, financial analysis and report-retrieval. These amateur programmers are self-taught refugees from careers like accounting, chemistry or jazz. They work on unreasonably short deadlines. They have at their disposal mediocre testing and integration tools. They report to ill-informed corporate bureaucrats who believe the advertising claims that writing significant applications is as easy as using a spreadsheet.</p>
<h3>Short term-thinking</h3>
<p>The year 2000 bug is only one example of the short-sightedness of what some claim to be a professional occupation. A typical programmer makes hundreds of such myopic decisions. They just follow management&#8217;s wishes for speedy completion and minimal expense. The only reason why the year 2000 bug has attracted so much attention is because it is ubiquitous and has a definite deadline when its effects will become universally observable. There are millions of other bugs just as negligent but they pop up randomly, one location at a time, most likely costing more than the $300 billion for the threatened collapse in 37 months. </p>
<h3>Tolerance of pain</h3>
<p>IS managers are willing to accept frequent systems crashes from software incompatibilities as a natural phenomenon. It&#8217;s all a matter of conditioning. Businesspeople expect to get a dial tone from their phone 99.99% of the time. Most users of personal computers consider themselves lucky if their desired applications stay up for a week without some mishap. Conditioning to pain can make people tolerant to pain, even if they don&#8217;t like it.</p>
<h2>Prospects for recognizing total costs</h2>
<p>Though erosion in compatibility, creeping features, unqualified programmers and vendor incentives result in conditions that are wasteful and onerous, all of that must be corrected in due course. Competent management will accept damage to its business only if the effects are either insignificant, or if a remedy is unavailable. I&#8217;m confident that the current state of the software business will not be allowed to continue. The costs are not insignificant and in many cases represent a considerably greater percentage of corporate profits than before.</p>
<p>With regard to the remedies, I expect that sooner or later some vendor who seeks to gain an inordinate competitive advantage will start selling computer technologies that recognize the total costs of the customer&#8217;s ownership instead of just the purchase price of what they sell.</p>
<p>Icarus&#8217; wings were said to be held together only with wax that ultimately melted. Yet, progress overcame even this improbable feat. The history of technology and competition proves us that quality, reliability and ease of use will always prevail.</p>
<p>In software&#8217;s case, that&#8217;s likely to happen soon. There are just too many businesses than can&#8217;t keep up with wasting money on shoddy programming solutions.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Correct use of headings</p>
<blockquote><p>I was a closet h3 abuser, and I bet if you&#8217;d admit it a lot of you are too. What&#8217;s a h3 abuser? Well I&#8217;m gonna come out of the closet and tell you all about it. There are those little boxes On websites, especially blogs, there are those little boxes, often in column 1 or 3, full of links and stuff and they all have little headings. When making these little boxes you think &#8220;Well I should use a heading tag, because that&#8217;s more semantic. But those heading tags look too big and those ones look too small, but that one is just about the right size. I&#8217;ll make it <b>h3</b>.&#8221;</p>
<p>Hands up! Who defaults to <b>h3</b>when they know they need a heading but don&#8217;t know what size it should be?</p>
<p>I hope I&#8217;m not the only sucker with his or her hand up right now. Speaking in my defense though, I was considering the way it looked unstyled, which is good to do right? Who knew changing your ways and thinking semantically would be so hard? In a previous blog entry I ranted about how WYSIWYG had no place on the web and yet the way I dealt with heading tags was doing just that. OK, so, <b>h1, h2, h3</b> etc. represent a hierarchy and despite best intentions I was still using them in relation to the size of heading they provide.</p>

<h2>Visitors and GraphViz</h2>
<p>Visitors is a very fast web log analyzer for Linux, Windows, and other Unix-like operating systems. It takes as input a web server log file, and outputs statistics in form of different reports. The design principles are very different compared to other software of the same type.</p>
<p>GraphViz is used to show those graphs generated by the visitors step.</p>
<h3>Demo</h3>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://image-tags.com/files/visitors.html">The visitors statistics</a></li>
<li><a href="http://image-tags.com/files/visitors.png">The graphviz trails graph</a></li>
</ul>
<h2>How to Install</h2>
<p>Here’s how you install visitors and graphviz on a dreamhost account. Quick and easy how to install fast website logging and graphing into a Dreamhost account</p>
<ol>
<li>First, grab the precompiled version of visitors</li>
<li>Next copy this makefile source to a directory of your choosing (on your Dreamhost account)</li>
<li>You’ll need to edit the HOST and TARGET lines at least, and probably the EXCLUDE line as well.
<pre>HOST=fastwiki.com
TARGET=~/image-tags.com/files

EXCLUDE=--exclude 72.134.42.251
--exclude 75.80.163.250
--exclude /admin/

OPTIONS=-TGKZHUWMRDYS
--screen-info
-m 400
--operating-systems
--browsers
--error404
--filter-spam

PREFIX=--prefix http://$(HOST)

LOGS=~/logs/$(HOST)/http

NULL=&gt;&amp; /dev/null

TMPLOG=access.tmp.log
DOTFILE=graph.dot
OUTFILE=visitors.html
OUTGRAPH=visitors.png

all: $(TARGET)/$(OUTFILE) $(TARGET)/$(OUTFILE) $(OUTFILE) $(OUTGRAPH)
cp $(OUTFILE) $(OUTGRAPH) $(TARGET)

$(OUTFILE): $(TMPLOG)
~/bin/visitors $(TMPLOG) $(OPTIONS) $(EXCLUDE) $(PREFIX)
&gt; $(OUTFILE)

$(DOTFILE): $(TMPLOG)
~/bin/visitors $(TMPLOG) $(OPTIONS) $(PREFIX) $(EXCLUDE)
--graphviz &gt; $(DOTFILE)

$(OUTGRAPH): $(DOTFILE)
~/bin/dot $(DOTFILE) -Tpng &gt; $(OUTGRAPH)

$(TMPLOG): $(LOGS)/access.log
zcat $(LOGS)/access.log.*.gz &gt; $(TMPLOG)
cat $(LOGS)/access.log &gt;&gt; $(TMPLOG)

clean:
-rm $(DOTFILE) $(TMPLOG) $(OUTGRAPH) $(OUTFILE) *~ *#</pre>
<ul>
<li>Host is the website hostname you’re interested in, TARGET is the place where the visitors.html (the stats) file and visitors.png (the graphs) files will be copied.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Type make</li>
<li>Browse to the TARGET location on your server to view the files.</li>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h2>Iframe replacement techniques</h2>
<h3>Including html in a page while maintaining xHtml strict compliance</h3>
<p>I have added some kayak.com ads the other night, to the archive pages related to traveling. These ads are actually full-featured search snippets that allows you to directly search kayak.com database. Very handy things.</p>
<p>Sadly, they are written the old-fashion way, with quirks mode in mind, and worse yet – they are writing nested table tag soup directly into the page – no iframe thingie, like Google AdSense is doing. Thus, when my CSS files got applied to it, the snippet fell apart. Luckily, the snippet always opens a new window, thus I quickly coded in an iframe in which the snippet is displayed. Which was all dandy…apart from the fact that my pages are XHTML 1.0 Strict, in which iframe is banned element. Jolly.</p>
<p>Correct way to include another HTML page into another is by object. The element which only purpose is to insert any foreign object into nice and structured web page.The standard way of coding an object element is to use appropriate MIME type and add the foreign object’s URL. Naturally, this does not work in IE6 (nor IE7) so I had to look for the infamous clsid value for text/html.</p>
<p>Using an object Element instead of an iframe by Cody Lindley</p>
<p>Based on the technique from this page, my additions are simply to combine all the various bits into a single element for ease of use.</p>
<h4>Code Sample</h4>
<p>Firstly, we can combine the classid attribute with the non-IE object:</p>
<p>&lt;object classid=&#8221;clsid:25336920-03F9-11CF-8FD0-00AA00686F13&#8243; type=&#8221;text/html&#8221;<br />
data=&#8221;object.html&#8221; style=&#8221;width:300px;height:200px;&#8221;&gt;<br />
&lt;p&gt;Fallback text&lt;/p&gt;<br />
&lt;/object&gt;</p>
<p>Secondly, we need to eliminate the borders and scrollbars that IE presents:</p>
<p>&lt;!&#8211;[if IE]&gt;<br />
&lt;style type=&#8221;text/css&#8221;&gt;html, body {border:0;overflow:visible;}&lt;/style&gt;<br />
&lt;![endif]&#8211;&gt;</p>
<p>Note that unless the external (the one in the “iframe”) document is in Quirks mode, a bevelled edge-type border will be rendered in IE7/Win. This is sub-par and will require more investigation.</p>
<p>Also note that I’m using a Reset CSS file on this page, so your mileage (in terms of resetting base browser styles) may vary.</p>

<p>Google Desktop Search is among the technologies that are improving the human-computer experience. Its main purpose is to find documents you&#8217;re looking for. The supplemental index is seen as a secondary database of results for unique information appearing on, and sometimes only on less important pages, URLs that are unlikely to be looked or shown for generic search terms, but will remain in the index for more refined, obscure queries.</p>
<p>+ Symptoms: Pages of the web site that previously were shown as normal results are now Supplemental Results, thus rank significantly lower than other pages and web sites.</p>
<p>+ Common reasons: Inconsistent, linear, or otherwise corrupted navigation. Accessibility issues resulting in PageRank not flowing through the web site in a way its owners would like it to. Low PageRank of the pages on the web site. Duplicate content. Also, URLs that have been changed, redirected or deleted may be featured with their old versions in the supplemental index along with a cached snapshot of their last seen state up to a year. In these cases make sure to check whether the URL in question also shows as a normal result, which would be the updated version of the same page.</p>
<p>+ Resolution: Examine your web site structure thoroughly for duplicate content, navigational inconsistencies and link hierarchy. Also, as the web site is seen more and more important as a resource, gaining more quality inbound links will raise its PageRank and allow its inner-level pages to be viewed as a relevant result for broader queries, and may eventually be transferred to the normal index. Make sure to pass the proper amount of weight to pages to be considered important by using Anchor text links instead of javascript, flash, image links.</p>
<p>See more information and hints on the reworked Supplemental Results index , Duplicate content, proper Website navigation and PageRank in the related articles.</p>
<p>You may also open the + Website Diagnostics Panel to help you diagnose your web site.</p>
